Sharing Resources on Leadership and People Development
How do you go about being an excellent leader of people development?
First, have an understanding that developing the skills of your team members is your responsibility as a leader. Your organization’s Human Resources and Talent Development departments are resources for you to use in this endeavor. But it is your responsibility to ensure the continuous development of your team members and yourself, not theirs.
Everyone on your team has talents that can be improved. These can be the functional skills needed to perform their jobs, or the interpersonal skills required to get work done in collaboration or cooperation with others. Great leaders ensure that all members of their teams receive on-going development, both formally and informally.
There are so many resources, both free and paid, on leadership and skill development available through the Internet (articles, videos, book excerpts, workshops, and learning programs) that there is no valid excuse for any leader to not be constantly upgrading their leadership, motivational, communication, collaboration, coaching, and people development skills.
To help you get started I have a list of highly recommended leadership resources on our Caliente Leadership website, which you will find under the Resources tab at the top of each page. Additionally, I also have a list of recommended articles on leadership and recommended books on leadership.
Lastly, to help motivate you to become an excellent developer of people, here are three of my favorite leadership quotes on people development:
What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others. ~ Pericles
Before you become a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader success is all about growing others. ~ Jack Welch
The nobler sort of man emphasizes the good qualities in others, and does not accentuate the bad. The inferior does the reverse. ~ Confucius
This article is excerpted from my book Great Leadership Words of Wisdom, which is available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle formats and has over 1000 quotes on leadership from global business leaders, statesmen, athletes, coaches, sages, and philosophers.
