Foundations of Great Leadership

Becoming A Great Leader

Leadership is not a sometime thing. You do not get to be a leader just now and then,  when you feel like it, or when the urge hits you.

No, leadership is an all-the-time thing and great leaders lead all the time.

Great leaders also know how and when to switch between their roles as managers, leaders, coaches, mentors, and individual contributors. This is a particularly tough task for new supervisors, managers, and team leaders, who often fall into the trap of “playing the boss role.”

For more on this, watch our video The Foundations of Great Leadership.

Actions and Behaviors

Leadership is a collection of skills and behaviors that become habitual, either consciously or subconsciously. However, there is one major difference between good leaders (or managers) and great leaders. Great leadership is a collection of deliberate, conscious, purposeful habits, built upon a solid leadership philosophy and a persistent leadership mindset.

This is why critical leadership skills have segued in recent years into a focus on behaviors and actions, over traits, titles, and “looking the part.”

Leadership is also a privilege. It is not about a position, title, or a spot on the organization chart. It is also not about power or having perks that others do not.

Leadership is a skill to be developed, practiced, and enhanced.

Great Leadership Foundations

There are four core aspects of being a Great Leader:

  • Leading People
  • Leading People Development
  • Leading for Results
  • Leading Your Own Personal Development and Growth

Great leadership is built on a foundation of trust. And that trust is built on transparency, authenticity, credibility, accountability, and flexibility.

Without a foundation of trust, you cannot be a great leader.
